Story in Statewide Aviation's newsletter - Plane Talk - available at this link: Plane_Talk_summer2021.pdf (alaska.gov)
Has it been difficult to find a convenient place to practice accurate short field landings in the Anchorage area? The Lake Hood Pilots Association had been thinking so. In June, volunteers painted white short field practice markings on the gravel Goose Bay Airport runway.
With support from Rich Sewell of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, volunteers measured out each end of Runway 26/15. With markings spaced 25 feet apart at 100-foot intervals down the runway for 900 feet at each end, pilots can now train safely to a known standard at Goose Bay for that next great beach adventure or fly-in competition!
With a few buckets of paint, some loaned equipment, and an afternoon work party, Lake Hood Pilots Association created this new opportunity for pilots. Thanks to AOPA Alaska Regional Director Tom George for supporting the project, state operator Kyler Hylton for getting the runway graded and packed ahead of schedule, volunteer David Karalunas for the loan of a paint sprayer and generator, and LHPA President Al Clayton for supporting the project and volunteering his nice red truck at the risk of being covered in white paint. Volunteers celebrated with a post-work BBQ.
Next spring, we plan to touch up the markings, hopefully a little earlier in the season before pilots shift to floats. We look forward to you joining us. Please contact Galen Pospisil for more information: 907-312-4720.
